The new lord chancellor, former criminal barrister Alex Chalk MP, is to join some 16,000 lawyers in the biggest fundraising event in the legal year, this year's London Legal Walk on Tuesday. Chalk is the first lord chancellor to join the event in recent years. He will lead the walk alongside the lord chief justice, the president of the Law Society, the director of public prosecutions and the Treasury solicitor and permanent secretary to the Government Legal Department.
This year the event, organised by the London Legal Support Trust, aims to raise £1m to support free legal advice in London and the southeast.
Law Society president Lubna Shuja said: 'I am thrilled to be taking part in the London Legal Walk on 13 June with many others from the legal profession to help raise funds for free legal advice charities. The legal help these charities provide to those in need is more important than ever given the cost-of-living crisis. I encourage everyone who can to join the walk and help raise as much money as possible for access to justice.'
The walk attracts a range of people, from advice agency staff, to lawyers from across the profession, law students, to high-ranking judiciary. The event culminates in a street party in Carey Street, behind the Royal Courts of Justice. The Gazette will attend as official media partner.
