While solicitors spend millions of hours getting to grips with the new Solicitors Regulation Authority code (only four years after the last major revision) in the runup to October, they might care to look up the composition of the members of the SRA and the Legal Services Board.

They will find that there are hardly any solicitors on the boards and there is no high street solicitor experience. It used to be said that all professions were a conspiracy against the laity. Now that we have governing boards full of lay members, have we not now got the reverse?

Any measure of natural justice to protect solicitors is absent in the code.
