As the Indian legal services opens up, a UK-based law school has teamed up with an India-based education provider to help international lawyers gain dual qualification.

The College of Legal Practice (CLP) has been chosen to be online platform Educayden’s exclusive partner for SQE (Solicitors Qualifying Examination) training in India. Educayden works with academic providers in the Indian market.

SQE, which came into force in September 2021, replaced the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Scheme, which allowed qualified lawyers from abroad to qualify in England and Wales. Candidates have to complete two centralised assessments, known as SQE1 and SQE2.

CLP told the Gazette it had already, by the time Educayden approached it nine months ago, had conversations with organisations in India interested in understanding more about SQE.

This is neither CLP’s first nor last partnership. ‘We have a number of partnerships already with international organisations including universities such as Middlesex Dubai University. We are currently finalising other partnerships which will promote the SQE pathway to qualification,’ a spokesperson said.

The partnership comes after the Bar Council of India published rules allowing foreign lawyers and firms to practise foreign law in the country ‘on a reciprocity basis’.
