Legal services is among the UK’s most successful business sector for reducing carbon emissions, a report released today reveals.
The report, from HRH the Prince of Wales’ Mayday Network, a group of 2,862 companies working towards a sustainable future, found that network constituents had together reduced emissions by an average of 7%, saving more than 422,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere.
The legal sector, which makes up 6% of the membership, reduced emissions by 8.8% – or 1.8% more than the average. It outperformed the banking and insurance sectors, but trailed just behind accountants and management consultants.
Elaine Radford, director of corporate social responsibility at national firm DLA Piper, one of the sponsors of the Mayday Network, said: ‘By implementing relatively easy measures, such as movement sensors to turn off lights, installing more efficient heating and reducing business travel, we were able to make a real impact in reducing our carbon emissions. We would encourage other law firms to do likewise.’
