Only the House of Lords can preserve the notion of equality for everyone before the law, the shadow justice secretary Sadiq Khan writes in the Gazette today.

On the eve of the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Bill reaching the Lords, Khan says that Labour peers ‘stand ready for the fight’ to amend the bill.

He says that some 650,000 fewer people a year will be entitled to legal aid if the government’s plans go through, casting doubt on the survival of high street firms, law centres and Citizens Advice services.
