John Wotton of magic circle firm Allen & Overy is set to become president of the Law Society in 2011 after this week winning the election for deputy vice-president.
Wotton, 54, was a partner at Allen & Overy for 23 years and is now a consultant to the firm, practising in UK, EC and international competition law.
He was elected to council in September 2007 and is a representative for EU matters. Wotton (pictured) told the Gazette: ‘It is a challenging and exciting time to be participating in the leadership of the profession.’
He added: ‘I believe strongly in a single solicitors’ profession. Our ability to respond to changing demands is a strength of the profession. We need to foster that.’
Wotton, who was admitted to the profession in 1978, will be formally appointed deputy vice- president at the Society’s annual general meeting in July.
At the same time, Bob Heslett will take over the one-year presidency from Paul Marsh and Linda Lee will become vice-president.
