When I saw the caption beneath the photograph illustrating my article ‘Getting a Get’, which you kindly published on 16 June, I was somewhat perplexed, as I was not aware that a wife would display her rings in her hands in the rabbinical court, meaning she’s succeeded in having her Get.

I immediately hot-footed it to the beth din (court of Jewish law) to find out; I discovered that this does not in fact happen.

It is, however, interesting to note that the woman is asked to remove her rings for an entirely different reason, though she certainly does not display them in her hands.

The wife, when receiving a Get, is asked to remove any rings she may be wearing - whether or not they are wedding rings.

This has nothing to do with symbolically removing traces of the marriage, as per the illustration.

According to the Jewish religious laws on this issue, the reason is that there should be nothing between the wife’s hands and the Get.

So even if she were wearing gloves, the same rule would apply.
