A fee-sharing firm has announced the recruitment of 19 lawyers from the closed business Axiom Ince as part of a wider expansion. The cohort, which includes six partners, will join Spencer West in the biggest of a number of announcements made about the firm’s growth.

Spencer West has also acquired London-based private wealth boutique Hieron LLP, with a seven-strong team including six partners moving across.

A further six specialists have been drafted in from London firm Selig + Partners, taking the total Spencer West team to almost 200 lawyers in the five years since it was formed.

The firm said today it will open an office in Birmingham’s legal district to house the former Axiom Ince staff based in the city. It also plans to establish a base in Mayfair, London, to accommodate other new recruits and grow the firm’s position in the private wealth market.

Co-founder Simeon Spencer said the additions show the continued attraction of fee-sharing models in the recruitment market, not just for individuals but for entire teams and even other firms.

He said: ‘Our first acquisition is further proof that our business is in a position where it can move beyond just focussing on organic partner and team recruitment to more substantial transactions where the right firm becomes available, and Hierons LLP certainly fits that bill.

‘This is a significant number of high quality legal experts expanding the range and depth of services we can offer to our clients in the UK and internationally. It’s a huge step forward for us and one which takes us to another level.’

The recruits from Axiom Ince include Birmingham-based partners Stephen Kong, Richard Kong and Peter Lin who will be based at Spencer West’s new Birmingham hub in Colmore Row with an additional 11 colleagues. Further former Axiom partners Sharokh Koussari, Vicky Tsan, Jaymin Ghelani and Vassos Vassou, all London-based, have also joined the Spencer West team.

Co-founder Antoine West said there was ‘real opportunity’ in moving into the region with a different model to most other firms locally.

‘Birmingham and the Midlands is a vibrant and exciting market for us and, with the teams joining us to launch our latest hub, we think it’s a region where our partners’ experience as their own business owners as well as lawyers can offer something different to more traditional models.’
