One of the new breed of law firm consultancy businesses has bought a rival in one of the first consolidations of its type.

Fee share firm Excello Law, among the first wave of consultancy firms in the UK, announced the acquisition of My Business Counsel (MBC), which runs along a similar business model. Excello says this is the first acquisition of its kind within the consultancy firm sector itself, and it takes the number of lawyers on its roster to around 200.

Founded in 2011 by Sandip and Rasneet Sohal, MBC has a team of 40 lawyers based in London and Birmingham and last year posted a turnover of £2.5m. The firm held itself out as a dispersed practice, seeking out consultant solicitors and teams of lawyers wanting to exit private practice to work independently and retain a proportion of the fees they bring in.

Excello Law, which was founded two years earlier, offers a similar alternative for senior lawyers to work flexibly away from the traditional firm environment, underpinned by central administrative, compliance and technological support.

Rasneet said: ‘We are delighted to join Excello, whose reputation and business model aligns with that of MBC. Excello is an ambitious firm, which we chose for its strong values. We look forward to moving forward as one entity.

‘Through Excello’s scale, our lawyers will benefit from a wider array of resources allowing them to focus on the service to their clients, which will in turn contribute to the growth of the Excello Group.’

This is now the ninth law firm purchase by Excello Law, and its founder and chief executive George Bisnought said further acquisitions are lined up. ‘Excello Law continues to set itself apart in the new model space with its commitment to a growth strategy centred on recruiting the best lawyers rather than one focused purely on numbers of lawyers,’ he added.
