Lord Justice Laws’ statement (quoted by Ian Newman in his letter) that 'religious faith is necessarily subjective, being incommunicable by any kind of proof or evidence', is of course itself 'necessarily' subjective being the reasoning or opinion of an individual, no matter how eminent or important.

What it is evidence of is the learned judge's antipathy to the rational foundations of Christianity and of faith set out with peerless precision and elegance eight centuries ago by Saint Thomas Aquinas in the Summa Theologica.

God most certainly can be known by pure reason.

Faith is rationally based and is secured by a supreme being that can neither deceive nor be deceived.

Perhaps the learned judge would like to chance his arm in open combat with St Thomas? Or perhaps not. Safer and easier to stick with the political correctness we all know and love, M'lud.
