The Coroners and Justice Bill creates new powers to clampdown on people who make fraudulent claims for legal aid or fail to pay their share of costs. Changes will allow data about individuals to be shared routinely between the Legal Services Commission and the Department for Work and Pensions. Courts will have additional powers to seize motor vehicles from people failing to make legal aid contributions. These complement existing powers such as earnings orders, distress warrants and freezing injunctions. The Ministry of Justice said: ‘We believe those who can afford to pay their costs should do so. The changes we propose will help us achieve these goals.’
