The first top-tier Chinese law firm to enter the London market says it is looking to co-operate - rather than merge - with UK firms.

Zhong Lun has built a formidable base in China in less than 20 years, with 150 partners and more than 700 lawyers. Some 300 people attended its UK launch last week.

The firm says it will seek opportunities in the fast-growing market of Chinese businesses investing in the UK and the rest of Europe. However Zhong Lun’s London office will have just five solicitors.

Robert Lewis, international managing partner, told the Gazette: ‘We’re not here to compete but to co-operate. We’re not here to enter a merger with any international firm - we’re very happy to have co-operation with as many law firms as possible.’ Indeed, Lewis said the opportunity to work with UK firms was a key factor in choosing London over New York for international expansion.

‘London’s big advantage is that in New York all the firms have a presence in China.

‘You come here and the magic circle and silver circle have a presence, but there are 20 or so more very strong London firms with no presence in China. That’s a great opportunity for us to co-operate in both directions with those who have a material need.’

Lewis said there is great interest in China at what his firm was doing, but he does not expect a rush of firms to follow suit.

‘Some of the other top 10 firms are expanding within China and have not established nationally or in Hong Kong. Most are a couple of steps away so I don’t expect a rush, but there will be some and there is room.’
