I am writing to clarify an inaccuracy concerning the postal ballot on the new Law Society charter. I want to assure all members that non-solicitors will not become members of the Society. They will be able to buy affiliate status that would give them access to products and services that we already provide to solicitors. This is aimed at extending our support to all those who work with solicitors in current and future practice types.
The Law Society must evolve to meet future challenges. These amendments are a vital first step in ensuring that we can exploit the opportunities created by the new legal landscape and continue to develop as a modern, responsive membership organisation. Increasing the Society’s commercial revenue through measures such as these will also help to keep the practising certificate fee down.
On behalf of the Council, I encourage you to vote for the resolution to confirm the Charter amendments. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to email me at president@lawsociety.org.uk.
