White & Case has become the latest City firm to bump up salaries – which includes a £25,000 pay boost for newly qualifieds.

The firm announced today it is increasing salaries for its London staff, which will come into effect on 1 January. White & Case employs 500 lawyers in London.

Trainees will see their salaries rise by £6,000. A first-year trainee will earn £62,000 and a second-year trainee will earn £67,000. Newly-qualifieds will see their pay jump from £150,000 to £175,000.

Lawyers with one-year post-qualification experience (PQE) will earn £185,500, up from the £158,500 they are currently earning. For lawyers with two-years PQE, their pay will rise from £171,000 to £200,000.

The firm said salaries are discretionary for lawyers with at least three years’ PQE but these are expected to be ‘competitive’.

A spokesperson said: ‘White & Case offers highly attractive careers to ambitious and talented lawyers. Our teams in London advise leading global clients on their most important, complex, cross-border deals and disputes and our people enjoy promotion opportunities and the benefits of the wide range of strong practices we have built in the City.

‘Following discussions with partners, we are increasing legal salaries in London, including for trainees, underlining our position as the leading global law firm.’

Competition to attract and retain talent is clearly hotting up as newly-qualifieds in the City, as well as in-house juniors, have recently been enjoying bumper pay packages.
