I recently came across a file dating back to 1975 when my firm moved offices. Among the papers is correspondence with both the Law Society and Yorkshire Law Society, seeking approval for plinth-mounted signage outside the new office.

No fewer than nine letters passed between the parties with concerns expressed by the local Law Society (in committee) that the proposed 5’ by 2’6” sign was ‘perhaps on the large side’. Only when drawings had been supplied and the signage reduced in size to 3’ by 18” did both societies express themselves satisfied.

Guidance was also sought as to how many times we were permitted to insert a notice in the local paper advising of our change of address; what wording was permitted; and what size the notice could be.

Quaint. A different world.
