David Pickup’s letter brought back fond memories of my days as an articled clerk. My articles started in 1969, and one task was to take clients to the firm next door to be sworn to an affidavit.
This was a task which I relished because, when I proffered £1 to the solicitor who invariably administered the oath, he would invite me to keep it. My eyes lit up since I was then on a weekly wage amounting to the princely sum of £8. From that point on, and throughout my articles, I was keenest in the office to undertake that task.
