I enjoyed Jan Stanton’s letter about grammar. I am sure we all receive appallingly badly written letters from time to time. My personal bugbear is the use of the word ‘gift’ as a verb. Surely the important thing for lawyers is to talk in language that people can readily understand. People do not talk about ‘gifting’ somebody a lift to the shops, so why do people insist on talking about people gifting a house?

I think we should be told.
