First they came for the human rights lawyers; then for the ‘remoaners’; and now the judges are to be vilified for doing their duty and, following sober deliberation, applying the law as they see it. For that they are subjected to venomous and deeply wounding personal attacks.

Some intemperate establishment factions played the man rather than the ball over the pursuit of alleged atrocities by elements of the military in and around the Iraqi conflict. Now it is the militant wing of the Brexiteers and their media fellow-travellers who dangerously seek to cast aside any considerations of due process or even of the decencies of debate.

It is time for all good people of tolerance and goodwill to wake up and smell the coffee; we must stand up and be counted for democratic maturity and against this descent into opinionated tantrum.
