On the subject of lawyers and sport, Obiter can report that the British Lawyers’ Cricket World Cup squad has returned from Barbados, though the team were apparently a touch disappointed not to have been met by an excitable press pack on landing at Gatwick.

The trip was not what one would term a resounding success, with the British lawyers finishing seventh of eight teams.

On a happier note, reports team member Pete Dodd, partner at Lancashire firm Temple Heelis in Windermere (and the only solicitor in the team) they did get to mingle with legends of West Indian cricket such as Sir Garry Sobers, Joel Garner and Desmond Haynes.

Dodd sends a picture of himself ‘in a rare moment of success on the tour, stumping a West Indies batsman, but not until after he'd flayed our bowling to all parts of the ground and beyond’.

The Indian team emerged victorious, beating Sri Lanka in the final. The next tournament – or should that be pasting – will be in Delhi in 2013.
