The next phase of the government’s red tape challenge, in the first three weeks of June, is legal services. This will involve a review of the Legal Services Act for superfluous regulations, with particular focus on claims management, sentencing and bailiffs.

Encouragingly, and despite the room for cynicism, Downing Street seems to think that lawyers are natural partners in this effort, so the Law Society has been asked to help.

Last week’s board meeting heard that the Ministry of Justice has asked the Society for a sector champion, and deputy vice-president Nick Fluck is the lucky nominee.

So what is the Law Society’s opinion of the initiative ‘The board is asked to agree that, despite misgivings, the Society should support the challenge.’
