It took a month, but the Gazette’s revelations of difficulties with Ministry of Justice interpreting arrangements have finally reached the top. Labour MP Gisela Stuart last week used prime minister’s questions to ask about the quality of service experienced by West Midlands Police from translating contractor Applied Language Solutions. The prime minister replied that Stuart had herself been considering whether to stand for election as a police and crime commissioner.

‘That will be an excellent way of calling the police to account, and I hope that many other hon. members will consider it as a career change.’ Now, who could he have in mind?
