Old Africa hand Obiter has always had a thing for South African music. Think Soweto Beats, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela. And now also think Cape Town Opera, which came to Oxford for the European premiere of its musical tribute to elder statesman Nelson Mandela earlier this week. The indefatigable Kerry Underwood, solicitor and fundraiser, is behind the concert. Not content with running two firms – Underwoods in Hertfordshire and Law Abroad in South Africa – Underwood has teamed up with the Lord’s Taverners cricket charity to raise money for disabled and disadvantaged children. The concert takings are to be shared equally between the charity and Cape Town Opera and, by the time the Gazette went to press, some £5,000 had already been raised.
