Gyles Brandreth is not a man well versed in the art of restraint. So who better to lecture a group of solicitors about the art of communication than the former MP and One Show contributor?

Brandreth, invited by DBG Communications, had plenty of tips last week for lawyers who freeze on the big stage: eye contact, a touch of the shoulder, a warm smile and a firm handshake all featured highly.

But he couldn’t resist a name-drop or two - notably one evening spent in the royal box for the annual variety performance.

Spotting The Full Monty on the bill, the Duke of Edinburgh had expressed his delight at the prospect of a tribute to Field Marshal Montgomery. When 18 naked men emerged, the duke turned to an obviously horrified Brandreth and said: ‘Don’t worry dear boy, the Queen’s been to Papua New Guinea. She’s seen it all before.’
